Alex Goodman f46acb6e4c fix(cyclonedx): tighten source-distribution external refs (#5493)
* build source PURL from metadata and gate it to CycloneDX 1.6+

- the source PURL is built from package metadata instead of editing the binary PURL: only `distro` (plus `epoch` and `rpmmod` for rpm) is carried over, subpath is dropped, and the ref is skipped when the PURL type does not match the metadata ecosystem
- one emission rule for all ecosystems: only when the source name or version differs from the binary, so self-sourced rpm and alpm packages no longer get a redundant ref
- source RPM names must end in `.src.rpm` or `.nosrc.rpm`, and `nosrc` maps to `arch=nosrc`
- `source-distribution` refs are dropped when encoding below spec 1.6, since cyclonedx-go does not downgrade them (CycloneDX/cyclonedx-go#291)

* limit source-distribution refs to deb and rpm

- apk origins and alpm pkgbases are build recipes, not published source packages, and their names are usually also real binary packages, so a `source-distribution` ref there would point at a binary package. They keep relying on the `upstream` PURL qualifier.
- document why this is an external reference rather than `pedigree.ancestors`, with links to the CycloneDX spec discussion (CycloneDX/specification#612)

Syft

A CLI tool and Go library for generating a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) from container images and filesystems. Exceptional for vulnerability detection when used with a scanner like Grype.

Features

Tip

Installation

The quickest way to get up and going:

curl -sSfL https://get.anchore.io/syft | sudo sh -s -- -b /usr/local/bin

Tip

See Installation docs for more ways to get Syft, including Homebrew, Docker, Scoop, Chocolatey, Nix, and more!

The basics

See the packages within a container image or directory:

# container image
syft alpine:latest

# directory
syft ./my-project

To get an SBOM, specify one or more output formats:

# SBOM to stdout
syft <image> -o cyclonedx-json

# Multiple SBOMs to files
syft <image> -o spdx-json=./spdx.json -o cyclonedx-json=./cdx.json

Local containers-storage images

On Linux, syft can scan images from a local containers-storage store (e.g. built with Buildah or Podman) when asked explicitly; plain image references never look there:

syft --from containers-storage localhost/myimage:latest

# rootless stores must be read from inside the builder's user namespace
podman unshare syft --from containers-storage localhost/myimage:latest

This is included in the Linux release binaries. When building from source, add -tags containers_image_openpgp,exclude_graphdriver_btrfs.
